Carlos Sainz shows his support for George Russell during a delicate phase in the young British driver’s career, as rumors grow increasingly persistent regarding a potential move by Max Verstappen to Mercedes. The Spanish driver, currently racing for Williams after his departure from Scuderia Ferrari, seems to see echoes of his own experience in what George Russell is going through at this moment.
Last season, Carlos Sainz was still negotiating a potential contract renewal with Ferrari when the shocking announcement arrived: seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton would be joining the Maranello-based team in 2025. That news immediately put Sainz’s position in doubt, marking the beginning of a challenging year in which the Spanish driver had to balance his professional commitment to Scuderia Ferrari with the complex task of securing a new team for the following season.
Now, in 2025, George Russell finds himself in a very similar position. As speculation mounts about Max Verstappen possibly joining the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team — including widespread gossip surrounding an alleged secret meeting in Sardinia, complete with fake photographs — Carlos Sainz believes his fellow driver is not having an easy summer at all.
In an interview with talkSPORT, the Spanish driver — who currently races with car number 55 — reflected on Russell’s situation and offered his perspective: “As a driver, this is far from the ideal situation. We all try to pretend that we are not affected by it. We try to act as if nothing is happening, to stay focused and unaffected. But I firmly believe that, just like I did last year, it’s still possible to have a very strong season despite all the noise surrounding your future and your team. George is proving that this year, just as I proved it last season.”
Carlos Sainz reiterated that such uncertainty is never the ideal environment for any Formula 1 driver, as it ends up affecting the entire team — from the engineers to the mechanics — and undermines overall cohesion.
“In an ideal scenario,” he continued, “the way you race, the way you perform, and the way you become a World Champion happens when everything is calm and stable. When there is complete mutual trust — 100% commitment from you to the team and from the team to you. Even though it’s still possible to achieve great results during turbulent times, it’s certainly not the ideal scenario, and it’s not what any driver wishes for,” Carlos Sainz concluded.
