George Russell has revealed how a conversation with tennis superstar Novak Djokovic and the example set by veteran F1 driver Fernando Alonso have shaped his mindset about longevity and dedication in sport. Despite the technical superiority of the McLaren in the 2025 season making it difficult for the Mercedes driver to challenge for the championship, Russell is enjoying what he describes as the best year of his career so far.
Following Lewis Hamilton’s departure, Russell has become the reference point for the Brackley-based team and aims to be a central figure for Mercedes in the coming years as he continues his pursuit of a Formula 1 World Championship.
Learning from Djokovic
Russell explained in a detailed interview on the UNTAPPED podcast that he drew valuable lessons from Djokovic, particularly about the importance of consistent dedication and long-term discipline. The British driver recounted that Djokovic told him about his younger years, emphasizing that even at age 20, he never skipped training sessions, understanding that each effort accumulated would allow him to maintain top-level performance well into his thirties. Russell highlighted that this lesson about dedication and consistency deeply resonated with him.
He also noted that Djokovic’s example underlines how disciplined preparation early in one’s career can have long-term benefits, not just in tennis but in any high-performance sport, including Formula 1.
Inspired by Alonso’s longevity
George Russell is equally inspired by the career of Fernando Alonso, who continues to compete at the highest level in Formula 1 at over 44 years of age. He explained that while Formula 1 is physically different from tennis — with less continuous impact on the legs — the determination and resilience required to perform at the top level are comparable. Seeing Alonso remain competitive motivates Russell to aim for a long career, aspiring to continue racing even beyond the age of 40.
The Mercedes driver emphasized that Alonso’s example proves it is possible to maintain performance over decades if one combines discipline, preparation, and passion. Russell views this as a guiding principle for his own career, aiming to match the longevity of one of Formula 1’s most enduring stars.
A career-long mindset
George Russell’s reflections highlight his focus on both physical and mental preparation as he continues to develop as a driver for Mercedes. Drawing lessons from Djokovic’s disciplined approach and Fernando Alonso’s remarkable longevity, he aims to combine dedication with experience to remain competitive for many years. His goal is clear: to extend his career and keep racing at the highest level, inspired by those who have successfully done the same in sport.
