Toto Wolff has warned Kimi Antonelli and George Russell that Mercedes will not tolerate a destructive internal rivalry as its two drivers compete for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship. The Mercedes team principal made it clear that any driver who allowed the battle to damage the team would face an immediate and severe consequence.
Kimi Antonelli and George Russell have already fought one another at several races during the opening half of the season, although their encounters have yet to reach breaking point. With both drivers involved in the championship contest, however, the pressure within Mercedes could continue to increase as the campaign progresses.

“George was in the lead in Montreal, and then he DNF’d,” Toto Wolff explained. “So that could have been another win for him, and certainly it would have put him in a better frame of mind for the races to come. To be fair enough to him, we had an engine issue on his car, which took a long time to discover, and it was worth two-tenths.”
George Russell’s run of technical difficulties continued in Hungary, where Mercedes later identified the problem behind his disastrous start. The British driver’s recovery drive and the explanation for the failure added further context to a season in which reliability problems have repeatedly cost him valuable points.

Toto Wolff acknowledged that the pressure on George Russell had increased because he entered the season as the clear favourite, only for Kimi Antonelli to make a dramatic step forward after a difficult sequence during his rookie campaign.
“And then, obviously, the pressure has built up for him because he’s come in as the clear favourite,” Toto Wolff continued. “Kimi had nine races without a point last year, then Kimi is very good this year. And suddenly, the kind of expectations change, and you’re a little bit on the back foot.”
Kimi Antonelli reinforced his position at the top of the championship by recovering from seventh on the grid to finish third at the Hungarian Grand Prix. His latest podium extended his advantage and increased the pressure on both George Russell and the other leading title contenders.
The changing dynamic has already prompted discussion about how George Russell can respond to Kimi Antonelli’s growing momentum. Toto Wolff nevertheless believes the British driver possesses the resilience required to reverse his fortunes.
“If there is someone on the back foot who can manage that, it’s George, because he’s a hard guy,” Toto Wolff concluded. “The best ones are able to turn things around. So I think he can, absolutely.”
George Russell therefore retains the full backing of his team principal, but the wider message to both Mercedes drivers is unmistakable: they may fight for the Formula 1 world championship, provided their rivalry never becomes more important than the team itself.
