When it comes to his renewal, the official announcement has not yet arrived, but there is a strong sense of calm and confidence. Both Russell and Mercedes know that everything will be put down in black and white in the coming weeks. The negotiations for the new deal are progressing smoothly, and both sides currently have other priorities to manage.
“We are talking and so far the conversations between us are positive,” Russell explained this afternoon at Zandvoort. “As I said, nothing happened during the summer break, because neither I nor the team felt the need to rush things. We wanted to enjoy our little time off, but things are moving in the right direction now.”
The Mercedes driver added: “As I mentioned before the break, we just need to make sure everything is right, that there is no pressure from me and no pressure on the team either. That is why the process may take a little longer than expected, but there is no reason to look at the situation any differently.”
Russell continued by pointing out that the renewal is just one of several priorities on the table: “At this stage, it is simply about balancing many different things – signing the contract, the development of the 2026 car, sponsor events, and getting back into shape with training. It is not like we can stop the whole world just to settle this matter.”
While the agreement between Mercedes and George Russell looks like a mere formality, what stands out is his response regarding the duration of the deal. The former Williams driver underlined that it will not be the number of years that matters most, but rather the competitiveness of the W17 – the car that Mercedes will bring to the grid in 2026, designed under the brand-new technical regulations coming into force on January 1st.
