One month to recharge, one month to return as Mercedes’ team leader after young Kimi Antonelli tried to climb the hierarchy with two victories in the Far East. George Russell spoke to the media about FIA regulations, his future at Mercedes, and the emerging internal dynamic with his young Italian teammate.
“I will be here next year with the team and that’s it, so there is not much more to say. It is a multi-year agreement, I still have several years left on my contract. And as we said last year, even if targets are not fully achieved, if things are going well, then we continue. The season is incredibly long and no championship has ever been won after three races. When I look at things rationally, I think I have maximised the results this year.”
“Regulations? There will be a compromise somewhere, because at the moment the cars are set up to produce the fastest possible lap times. The FIA has been in contact with several drivers, and it has been a collective dialogue.”
“Fight with Kimi? I am sure they will give both of us exactly the same opportunity. It has always been like that at Mercedes. I am not thinking about Kimi, I am not thinking about the championship, I am focusing on myself. Formula 1 is bigger than any driver, but you wouldn’t want to lose Max because we all enjoy racing against him. He has achieved what most drivers dream of. At some point in life, you might want something different.”
In summary, George Russell’s recent comments highlight his unwavering confidence in his position within Mercedes and his focused approach to the 2026 season. While external pressures and internal competition continue to grow, Russell’s commitment to the team’s long-term vision remains the driving force behind his performance on the track.
