Kimi Antonelli reveals how China changed his 2026 F1 season and why Monaco was decisive

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes W17, 2026 F1

Kimi Antonelli has identified his first Formula 1 victory in China as the turning point of his remarkable 2026 season, explaining how the breakthrough lifted an enormous weight from his shoulders and gave him the confidence to build a commanding championship lead. The Mercedes driver also reflected on his surprise victory in Monaco, insisting that his own driving and the strength of the team’s chassis and aerodynamics played a decisive role in a result that had initially been expected to favour Ferrari.

Now approaching his first Formula 1 world title in only his second season, the young Italian has transformed a promising but challenging rookie campaign into an extraordinary run of victories. After a difficult 2025 punctuated by flashes of exceptional talent, Kimi Antonelli entered 2026 without being considered the leading championship favourite. However, a succession of impressive performances quickly left his rivals struggling to keep pace, with the Monaco Grand Prix potentially representing the decisive moment in the title battle.

Kimi Antonelli reveals how first F1 victory in China changed everything

For Kimi Antonelli, the breakthrough came at the Chinese Grand Prix, where he secured his maiden Formula 1 victory. Although he had already demonstrated the speed required to compete at the front, converting that potential into a race win represented an important psychological milestone.

Speaking in an exclusive interview published in the latest issue of Autosprint, the Mercedes driver explained how the success in Shanghai transformed his confidence and helped establish the momentum behind his championship campaign.

“My first victory in China took a huge weight off my shoulders,” Kimi Antonelli explained. “First and foremost, it was an enormous satisfaction, but also a relief. I had already shown that I was capable of winning, but finally breaking through marked the turning point.”

The Italian did not have to wait long to experience victory again. His subsequent success at Suzuka reinforced the belief that he could consistently deliver winning performances and provided the foundation for further triumphs in Miami and Monte Carlo.

“Winning immediately afterwards at Suzuka was extremely important. It was a springboard that gave me the belief and momentum to win again in Miami and Monte Carlo,” Kimi Antonelli continued.

That sequence of victories helped the Mercedes youngster establish himself as the leading contender for the 2026 championship. The rapid improvement also represented a significant change from his first season, when his undeniable talent was accompanied by periods of inconsistency and more difficult weekends.

Why Kimi Antonelli’s Monaco victory was crucial for Mercedes

While his first victory in China brought relief, Kimi Antonelli considers the Monaco Grand Prix another fundamental moment in his development and Mercedes’ season. The race presented an unusual challenge because Ferrari had been widely expected to dominate the streets of Monte Carlo.

The characteristics of the Monaco circuit appeared particularly well suited to Ferrari’s SF-26, whose mechanical and chassis characteristics were expected to provide an advantage through the Principality’s narrow, low-speed corners. However, Kimi Antonelli overturned those expectations by delivering a victory that demonstrated both his own ability and the broader strengths of Mercedes’ W17.

“It was nice to be the positive surprise in Monaco,” Kimi Antonelli said. “Engine power matters very little there. It’s all about the chassis and driving.”

The result was particularly significant because Monaco is traditionally regarded as one of the most demanding circuits on the Formula 1 calendar, where driver confidence, precision and mechanical grip can make the difference. With engine performance less influential than at many other venues, the weekend offered Mercedes an opportunity to demonstrate that its competitiveness extended beyond straight-line performance.

Kimi Antonelli insists Mercedes W17 is more than just its engine

Kimi Antonelli was particularly keen to highlight that Mercedes’ success in Monaco reflected the quality of the entire car, rather than an advantage derived solely from its power unit.

“Our car isn’t just about the engine. In terms of chassis and aerodynamics, it performs extremely well,” the Italian explained.

The comments underline the confidence Kimi Antonelli has developed in the W17 and its ability to compete across different circuit characteristics. Monaco was expected to favour Ferrari, yet Mercedes proved capable of winning even on a track where engine power plays a comparatively limited role.

“Winning in Monaco was a fundamental result for both me and the team. I played my part. I was convinced I could be competitive, and not starting as the favourite even helped us,” Kimi Antonelli added.

His remarks also offer an insight into the mindset behind his remarkable rise. Rather than feeling discouraged by Ferrari’s expected advantage, Kimi Antonelli approached the Monaco weekend believing he could challenge for victory, ultimately converting that confidence into one of the defining results of his season.

How China, Suzuka and Monaco shaped Kimi Antonelli’s 2026 title challenge

The progression described by Kimi Antonelli reveals how a series of individual victories developed into a sustained championship challenge. China removed the pressure of securing his first win, Suzuka confirmed that the breakthrough was no isolated result, and further successes in Miami and Monaco reinforced his belief in his ability to compete at the highest level.

Monaco carried particular importance because it demonstrated that Mercedes could overcome Ferrari even when the characteristics of the circuit appeared to favour the Italian team. The victory also strengthened Kimi Antonelli’s position in a championship that has increasingly moved beyond the reach of his closest rivals.

With his maiden Formula 1 world title now approaching, the Bologna-born driver can look back on a 2026 campaign defined not simply by the number of victories, but by the confidence and momentum generated by each important milestone. His first success in China changed his outlook, while Monaco provided another powerful confirmation of both his abilities and Mercedes’ competitiveness.
