Franco Colapinto admitted that he does not entirely agree with the FIA’s decision to impose a heavy penalty on him in Mexico. The Williams driver was penalized with 10 seconds for his contact with Liam Lawson, along with two points on his Super License.
While attempting to overtake the Racing Bulls representative on the outside of turn 1 in the final stages of the race, the Argentine’s car collided with that of his opponent. Lawson had left enough space to stay on track, but the stewards deemed it insufficient.
According to the FIA, Franco Colapinto forced the maneuver “when he was unable to complete the overtaking in turns 1 and 2.” For this reason, the Williams driver is considered responsible for the incident. The New Zealander, due to the contact and the damage sustained, was forced to stop in the pits.
In an interview with the Formula 1 YouTube channel, Franco Colapinto discussed his penalty in Mexico. A sanction that he “does not fully accept,” he stated, before comparing the incident to that of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen in Austin.
“It’s one of those cases where the driver pushes you off track. I was slightly ahead at the apex, and [Liam] braked at the last moment, pushing me off. Then he broke the front wing by himself.” – he pointed out.
Seeking an explanation for the penalty, Franco Colapinto added: “I think it’s more about what happened to Liam, who broke his front wing. It’s not my fault, yet [the FIA] focused more on the consequence. That’s why I received a penalty. In my opinion, the stewards shouldn’t look at the consequences of that small incident.”
The Williams driver finished the race in twelfth place, including the penalty. Following the Lando Norris – Max Verstappen incident at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, the FIA should consider making changes to the guidelines.
“I believe that drivers need to try to understand how we can improve. Not having these penalties that sometimes favor the inside competitor, leaving little space for those on the outside,” commented the Argentine ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
