Gasly and Colapinto in Baku riding the wave of good memories
In a season that has so far proven extremely challenging, Alpine hopes to regain some momentum in Baku. The city street circuit in the capital of Azerbaijan evokes fond memories for the two Enstone drivers, Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, who shared their thoughts on the upcoming weekend in the usual preview.
“I’m ready to return to Baku, where last year I scored my first Formula 1 points,” recalled Argentine Colapinto. “At the moment I feel comfortable with the car, even though Monza was a demanding challenge for us as a team. We spent time on debriefs, and last week I was at Enstone preparing for this weekend’s race in Azerbaijan. Baku is one of the most beautiful circuits we visit during the season. Driving with views of both the Old City and the famous Flame Towers, along with the particularly tight nature of the track, makes it one of the most enjoyable circuits. As I said, I have fond memories from last year, when I finished eighth, scoring my first Formula 1 points. This weekend we need to be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities that will surely arise on such a challenging track. We know it won’t be easy, but we’ll do our best to achieve the best possible results and start the Asian part of the season on a positive note for the team.”
“I’m looking forward to being back on track this weekend as we begin the next series of overseas races in Baku,” commented Gasly. “It’s a circuit and a city I really enjoy visiting and where I’ve had strong results in the past, including a podium in 2021 and another podium in GP2 in 2016. I achieved those results by driving cleanly and intelligently, which is essential on a demanding track like Baku. The long straights and the tight, narrow castle section, combined with high speeds and walls close on all sides, present a high risk. We need to make sure we are in the best position to take advantage when the time comes. Setting up the car will be complex, requiring a compromise between the track’s characteristics. We aim to start off strong on Friday, but honestly, it’s Baku: anything can happen. I’ve had a good week between races, including a day at Enstone on the simulator and visits to staff members. I also went to Paris for a padel event with Alpine, which was a lot of fun. It’s a sport I love to play, so being involved is always a pleasure.”
