Former F1 star Daniel Ricciardo could return to racing for the right reason. Daniel Ricciardo open to comeback, but not under old F1 pressures.

Daniel Ricciardo, 2024 F1

After stepping away from Formula 1 at the end of the 2024 season, Daniel Ricciardo is enjoying a period away from the spotlight and the constant pressure of the paddock. The former Red Bull and McLaren driver admitted that he needed to completely disconnect from the world of racing in order to rediscover both his enthusiasm and his sense of balance.

“Over the last few years, I felt the need to step away from competition for a while to truly understand what I actually missed about this sport,” the Australian explained during the Speed Street podcast.

Although Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 chapter appears closed for now, the eight-time Grand Prix winner has not completely ruled out the possibility of returning to motorsport in some form in the future. However, he made it clear that any potential comeback would come with a very different mindset compared to the one that defined his years at the highest level of racing.

“Right now, I feel good without that constant pressure. If one day I decide to get back behind the wheel, it would only be for the pure enjoyment of racing and to have a fun experience,” he said.

The former RB driver also spoke about his growing curiosity surrounding the Indianapolis 500, an event he will attend as a spectator for the first time. For Daniel Ricciardo, it represents an opportunity to experience a completely different side of motorsport after spending so many years immersed in the Formula 1 environment.

“After so many years fully immersed in Formula 1, I want to see a different environment up close and understand what kind of atmosphere exists at such an iconic event,” he added.

Daniel Ricciardo’s comments are likely to fuel further speculation about his long-term future in motorsport. While a return to Formula 1 seems unlikely under the current circumstances, his openness to racing purely for enjoyment could make categories such as IndyCar, endurance racing, or even special one-off appearances realistic possibilities in the future.

Ricciardo’s perspective highlights a growing trend among veteran drivers who seek to balance their competitive drive with personal fulfillment outside the rigid structure of the F1 calendar. By attending events like the Indy 500 as a fan, he is exploring the broader landscape of motorsport without the immediate weight of professional expectations.

This period of reflection allows him to appreciate the heritage of racing while maintaining the freedom he has found since his departure from the grid. Whether he eventually decides to compete in a different category or remains a prominent figure in the racing community, his focus remains on the joy of the sport rather than the pressure of the result.
