David Coulthard: “Daniel Ricciardo was one of the best, he burned out too early”. David Coulthard analyses Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 career.

David Coulthard believes that the challenge in the second half of Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 career was the loss of motivation rather than a decline in skill or speed.

Daniel Ricciardo, a talent not fully realized
Fans who have approached Formula 1 only in recent years may have a somewhat distorted perception of Daniel Ricciardo, knowing him primarily during the decline of the Honey Badger. The trajectory of the Australian driver in Formula 1 has been unique, with his absolute best performances concentrated in the first part of his career. Then, when fans and experts expected him to reach his full maturity and peak potential, an inexorable decline began.

The turning point in Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 journey was undoubtedly his departure from Red Bull at the end of 2018. This decision was largely motivated by his frustration at seeing the team increasingly focused on Max Verstappen. Leaving the Red Bull nest to join Renault was ultimately a gamble that did not pay off, and according to Coulthard, it may have been demoralizing for the Honey Badger. For David Coulthard, Ricciardo’s main issue was not a loss of speed, but a loss of motivation and drive.

Daniel Coulthard’s perspective
“Life makes you grow, and you see some drivers develop well, while others are consumed by success, which changes the trajectory of their careers,” Daniel Coulthard said on the High Performance podcast. “I think Daniel is an example of this. He was one of the brightest young talents to arrive in Formula 1, and one of the most skillful overtakers of his generation. He was always exciting to watch. When he left Red Bull, he did reasonably well at Renault. At McLaren, Lando Norris outperformed him in both seasons, even though Daniel won a race. At AlphaTauri, it simply never worked out.”

“Now he is happily retired and a wealthy man. But it seems he burned out too early,” Coulthard added. “Whether you are rich or poor, in life you carry a baggage that you must manage in order to seize the next opportunity. As life goes on, people often enter a phase where they no longer have that same desire. As my friend Martin Brundle says, you don’t lose speed, you lose the need.”
