After the announcement that he would not be renewing with Sauber, Valtteri Bottas found himself without a seat for 2025, and Juan Pablo Montoya believes the Finn would be an excellent reserve for Mercedes, backing up Kimi Antonelli and George Russell. In particular, his presence would provide greater security if the Italian rookie fails to withstand the pressures of the premier class.
Having not renewed with Sauber, who chose rookie Gabriel Bortoleto in his place, Valtteri Bottas will not be part of the starting grid next season for the first time since his debut in 2013. Rumors of his possible return to Mercedes as a third driver emerged even before the non-renewal was confirmed.
According to Juan Pablo Montoya, this option would be a wise choice by Mercedes, but it should concern Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is set to debut alongside George Russell. The former Colombian driver, speaking to W Radio Colombia, said: “It would be an interesting move for Mercedes. For me, it’s a warning if they sign Bottas.”
“First of all, they would take him as a reserve driver. I think it means they don’t trust Antonelli much, and of course, they wouldn’t say so publicly. They’re not entirely convinced. Toto [Wolff] said that Lewis [Hamilton] has lost his edge, which is why he now favors younger drivers.”
“I think taking Bottas as a reserve driver would be a smart move, and if something were to happen with Antonelli—if there were many accidents, many mistakes—for the sponsors, for Mercedes, and for everyone else, they would have a safe backup.” – the former Formula 1 driver pointed out.
“If I were Antonelli, with a decision like this by Mercedes, I’d think, ‘I need to get myself in line!’ The question is whether Antonelli is prepared enough. He’s done millions and millions of laps compared to all the drivers he’s competed against, except in Formula 1. He’s had plenty of preparation in Formula 2, even running with past Mercedes cars. Based on that, I’d think he’s very prepared.”
This season, Kimi Antonelli made his debut in official Formula 1 sessions, participating in the first free practice session for Mercedes at Monza and in Mexico City.
Regarding this, Juan Pablo Montoya said: “But what happened in Mexico… he was very slow, and that was serious. In Italy, he went out on track to break the world record on the first lap and wrecked the car, and in Mexico, he went out to avoid breaking it and was slow. He’ll be criticized both for accidents and when he’s slow. He needs to find the right balance.” – he concluded.
