Mattia Binotto, former Ferrari team principal and now leading the Sauber-Audi project, has explained the reasoning behind the decision not to renew Valtteri Bottas’s contract for the 2025 Formula 1 championship, opting instead to bet on the young talent Gabriel Bortoleto. The team is preparing for a phase of profound transformation ahead of its future entry as Audi F1, and Mattia Binotto emphasized that this journey will be challenging and long-term.
In an interview with RACER, Mattia Binotto stated, “We carefully considered the timing and the type of human resources necessary for this journey.” He added, “From this reflection came the conclusion that, to best manage the transition, it’s strategic to have a young driver with us, one who can grow with the team and face the challenges ahead.”
The choice to focus on Gabriel Bortoleto reflects the team’s desire to invest in new talent capable of adapting and developing alongside the team. Mattia Binotto highlighted the importance of building a cohesive team for the long-term success of the Sauber-Audi project. “We believe Gabriel can bring energy and freshness to the team,” he said. “His growth will be essential for reaching our goals.” – the Italian manager pointed out.
The decision not to renew Valtteri Bottas’s contract marks a significant shift for the team. The Finnish driver contributed his experience to the team’s development, but management has decided to take a new direction. “Valtteri is an exceptional professional, and we are grateful for his contribution,” Mattia Binotto noted. “However, looking to the future, we have chosen to invest in a young talent who can grow with us.”
