The Spanish driver has often emphasized that his decision will largely depend on the performance level of Aston Martin’s new car. If the 2026 single-seater proves to be truly competitive, Alonso could decide to step away from Formula 1 for good. According to his own words, that would mean leaving behind a team finally ready to fight for victories and championships — a perfect way to close an extraordinary career. Aston Martin clarifies Alonso’s future
The topic was addressed directly by Andy Cowell, CEO of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team. “I think Fernando’s words are understandable. Everyone wants to retire when they are at the top of their game. I believe that’s what he meant when he spoke about next year. His role within the team goes far beyond that of a driver, and his contribution is absolutely essential for us,” said Andy Cowell.
He continued: “Our goal is to provide both him and Lance with a competitive car for 2026, to work at the highest level and achieve great results. As for Fernando, I think everyone wants to see him back on the top step of the podium. We haven’t discussed any retirement plans so far — mainly because age doesn’t seem to be a limitation for him.”
