More points in the bag
It took eight Grands Prix since the start of this season before Fernando Alonso returned to the points, with the Spaniard finally smiling again at his home weekend in Barcelona thanks to a 9th place finish. That satisfaction grew even more in the most recent race in Canada, where the two-time Formula 1 world champion won with Renault back in 2006.
The difference with qualifying
Aston Martin’s #14 crossed the finish line in seventh position, earning valuable points for himself and the team ahead of the next round in Austria, which marks F1’s return to Europe: “It was a good race for us,” said the driver who will turn 44 in just over a month, “I felt satisfied with the car and, as expected, tyre management was difficult. In the race we knew that eighth place would be our realistic pace, and I couldn’t keep the faster cars behind. It seems our race pace is not as competitive as our qualifying pace, and that’s something we need to look into going forward.”
A difficult return
A very complicated weekend instead for the only Canadian driver on the grid: Lance Stroll. After confirming his presence in Montreal following surgery on his right hand, the Aston Martin driver finished in 17th position, last among those who did not retire from the race: “It was a long and difficult day, and overall I’m not very satisfied with this weekend,” he explained. “It was always going to be tough starting the race from P17, but I didn’t feel like the car had the pace to recover positions. In two weeks we’ll be back in Austria. We’ll work hard to find areas for improvement in every sector until then.”
