Brief return to prototypes: Alonso’s 210 mph test in the Valkyrie LM
Aston Martin used the April break to give two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso a special opportunity to step back into the world of endurance racing and prototype machinery.
After debuting the Aston Martin Valkyrie LM in the World Endurance Championship last year, the British manufacturer organised a private test session at Paul Ricard, with Fernando Alonso behind the wheel. The aim was to offer the Spanish driver — a two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner in 2018 and 2019, including a category victory in 2019 alongside Toyota — a nostalgic return to prototype racing in one of the most extreme cars ever built for an experienced driver like the Asturian.

“Unleashed track experience with Aston Martin. Great day. It’s always nice to relive the prototype years! Incredible experience and an amazing sound,” Alonso wrote in a post shared on Instagram after driving the significantly more aggressive version of his road-going Aston Martin Valkyrie.
While no official post confirmed the exact circuit used for the event, available information strongly suggests the test took place at Paul Ricard. The session was a special gift from Aston Martin, especially considering Alonso’s challenging moments in Formula 1 this season at the wheel of the AMR26.
Driving a prototype capable of reaching 210 mph (around 340 km/h) is far from an everyday experience, even for a driver of Alonso’s calibre, making this a unique and memorable outing during the F1 break.
