Three Races, No Points
The triple-header in Austin, Mexico City, and São Paulo ended without Aston Martin scoring a single championship point. The only other team to go point-less across all three races was Sauber. These few statistics perfectly illustrate the issues that the British team has been experiencing in recent months. Led by Mike Krack, the team made a big splash in the technical market with the acquisition of Adrian Newey, but before looking to the future, they need to focus on the present.
In Brazil, there were also some mistakes from the drivers—particularly Lance Stroll, who made a shocking exit from the track during the reconnaissance lap—but it’s clear that the AMR24 is not a car capable of consistently competing in the points zone. With Fernando Alonso on the team, the Spanish press has taken a close interest in the “green machine’s” performance, and the Spanish site AS reported the “mea culpa” voiced by Mike Krack after the latest Grand Prix.
Taking Responsibility
“We have to take responsibility for not giving Fernando and Lance the car they deserve,” said the team principal. It’s telling that both cars ran with the floor used back in May at the Imola Grand Prix during the São Paulo weekend.
“Fernando was in the points zone for most of the race, but due to a braking system failure, he locked up the rear wheels and fell back in the pack. At the end of the race, he was very uncomfortable due to the bumps, so our priority is to make sure he’s well. The drivers have been very patient, but we’re currently asking too much of them,” concluded the Luxembourgish manager.
