Fernando Alonso supports the FIA
It took some time, but finally, a voice has emerged that goes against the prevailing opinion on the issue of swearing in Formula 1. Since the controversy between Max Verstappen and the FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem began, the majority of drivers and former drivers have stood firmly behind the reigning world champion. Lewis Hamilton was the first to encourage his former rival to engage in civil disobedience and refuse to carry out the community service penalty, followed by criticism of the Federation from the GPDA drivers’ association, Nico Rosberg, Ralf Schumacher, and Jos Verstappen. The first to express partial criticism towards the Dutchman, however, is Fernando Alonso.
Swearing in F1, Fernando Alonso speaks
During an event in India organized by Aston Martin sponsor Cognizant, Alonso emphasized how important it is for Formula 1 champions to behave properly due to their role as role models for young people: “I think about those moments when you don’t feel like training or preparing for the next race… You have to do it anyway! You need to be responsible for yourself, your fans, and all those people who believe in you. We drivers have a big responsibility because we are like role models for many people. That’s why we have to behave correctly. We must be ready to be role models, whether we want to be or not.”
“So,” Fernando Alonso added, “if you want to say something inappropriate, I think you have to control yourself, hold back, and be politically correct. At this level, you realize that many people look up to us with admiration. If you’re a driver or someone else with a public role, you just have to behave properly. Fans can give you a lot of love, a lot of motivation, but there are also certain expectations. That’s why sometimes you have to restrain yourself… Fans need to believe in you. They tell you, ‘You’re my inspiration, you never give up, you’re a fighter.’ It reminds us that there are so many fans worldwide who follow F1, and we always have to keep that in mind. They give you so much love, so much motivation, but that also comes with responsibilities.” – the two-time Formula 1 world champion concluded.
