Nico Rosberg defends McLaren’s decision: “Giving team orders is never pleasant”. Nico Rosberg reflects on the reflects on the McLaren team orders.

Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38, 2024 F1

After the Singapore Grand Prix, McLaren has risen to first place in the constructors’ championship with a 41-point lead over Red Bull. Looking at the Drivers’ Championship, however, Lando Norris is still chasing Max Verstappen, and the gap between the two is 52 points. Although Oscar Piastri is also less than 100 points behind the Dutchman, he is not considered a realistic challenger. McLaren, however, has questioned its decision to use team orders and has not given a definitive guarantee that Norris will be given priority.

Former Formula 1 driver and world champion with Mercedes, Nico Rosberg, speaking about the British team, said that in his opinion, McLaren is going through an excellent period of form and that the team’s turnaround, from a backmarker at the beginning of 2023 to a championship contender, has been “magical.” Here are his comments.

Nico Rosberg’s comments

Nico Rosberg, interviewed by Sky Sport F1, stated: “It’s a positive spiral because everyone is happy, and that motivates you to work even harder and better, so I think McLaren will become stronger and stronger. They are on the rise, surpassing everyone, and it’s truly magical to see.”

“It’s incredible, but team orders and managing drivers are never pleasant. It’s not a fun thing to do because it’s all about emotions, and I hope they are at the top.”

The Brit then concluded by saying: “It was too premature to compromise Oscar so much. We’ve seen that he deserves the chance to win races, and he’s doing a fantastic job. He is also still in the running for the championship. He can still mathematically make it if things go his way. Then, at some point, McLaren will surely impose team orders, and Oscar has already said he will accept them.”
