Fernando Alonso praises Adrian Newey’s genius but cautions about 2026 F1 success. Fernando Alonso hails Adrian Newey as a "genius" after his Aston Martin debut at Monaco.

Fernando Alonso, Adrian Newey 2024

Adrian Newey made his official debut as a new member of the Aston Martin team at the Monaco GP in the Alonso and Stroll garage. Fernando Alonso has never hidden his admiration for Adrian Newey. On the occasion of the Monaco GP, the former Red Bull technical director made his first official appearance in the Aston Martin garage. After completing his gardening period, Newey began working for the British team in March 2025. Too late to design the 2025 car but not too late to plan for 2026.

From next season, a new regulation will be introduced, and the cars will be completely revolutionized. Could Aston Martin reach the top of the world championship thanks to Adrian Newey? Fernando Alonso, in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, spoke about the importance of the British engineer and how his presence could change the balance.

Is Aston Martin’s future in Adrian Newey’s hands?
From Alonso’s words in the interview with Mundo Deportivo, he appeared very enthusiastic about the collaboration with Adrian Newey. The Spanish driver said: “Adrian [Newey] is a very special person. Exactly that. He’s a genius unlike anyone I’ve worked with so far.”

Adrian Newey’s successes speak for themselves, and the two-time World Champion places great trust in the work of the British engineer: “He’s someone with a creative ability above average. He has a vision of what a racing car is, with a perspective different from that of the rest of us mortals, and he has that ability to design everything, whether it’s aerodynamics, or structurally the car, or safety, or suspension, or if you leave him here for a minute in Monaco he’ll draw a boat and put it in the water.”

Not only trust for the future but also great respect. Fernando Alonso doesn’t see Newey just as a person of great talent, a “genius,” but also someone to learn from. The driver added: “He’s the kind of person whose life is inventiveness, whose life is design, and the way he thinks, the way he talks is different and very educational. He teaches you. Every word you hear from Newey is a new lesson.”

What to expect from 2026?
Despite Adrian Newey’s presence at Aston Martin, Alonso believes this does not guarantee success in 2026. Reaching the top in F1 is not easy, there are many variables, but what he is sure about is the work of the team. The Spanish driver admitted: “We have to trust our people, our structures, our technicians, Newey, and this is perhaps the greatest certainty we have. We don’t have anything reliable yet, but we have the best to make the car (for 2026).”
