Fernando Alonso shines in Brazil
Fernando Alonso and Interlagos: the Brazilian track has never been just any venue for the Aston Martin driver, who won his two world titles here in 2005 and 2006, both with Renault, ending Michael Schumacher and Ferrari’s dominance. Now, twenty years after those victories, Alonso has shown what he is still capable of in the Sprint Qualifying for the São Paulo Grand Prix.
Outstanding Sprint Qualifying performance
After progressing through SQ1, the 44-year-old surprised everyone in the next session by setting the fastest time, putting his AMR25 at the top of the field with a lap of 1:09.330. This unexpected performance was followed by an excellent fifth-place finish, making him the leading driver outside the McLaren and Mercedes teams, and placing him ahead of Max Verstappen, who lined up immediately behind him on the grid.
Fernando Alonso comments on his performance
“It’s fantastic to be back here at Interlagos,” Fernando Alonso said. “This circuit has always been very special for me. The car felt good in FP1, and reaching SQ3 this afternoon and finishing in fifth position is an important result. Today was a good boost for the team and a positive way to start the race weekend. We hope to maintain this level of performance tomorrow, but you never know what can happen here.” – the former Ferrari and McLaren driver concluded at the end of the Brazil Sprint Qualifying session on Friday.
