Andrea Kimi Antonelli has revealed that he went through a challenging period during his debut Formula 1 season with Mercedes, admitting that he had some doubts about his future before signing his contract renewal. Now, however, the young talent from Bologna says he feels “calmer and more motivated than ever.”
Antonelli’s contract extension was officially announced alongside that of his teammate George Russell. While Russell secured a multi-year deal, Kimi Antonelli’s agreement is a one-year extension with an option for 2027, which will be activated based on his performance and development throughout the season.
Kimi Antonelli’s F1 debut has not been without obstacles. Mechanical issues, an accident during qualifying in Monaco, and on-track contacts with Max Verstappen in Austria and Isack Hadjar at Silverstone marked a complicated first half of the season. These incidents fueled speculation about his seat in the team, especially given rumors of a potential Max Verstappen move to Mercedes. Despite these challenges, Kimi Antonelli achieved his first podium in Canada and returned to competitive form in the following rounds, finishing fourth in Baku and fifth in Singapore.
The importance of the renewal
In a post-announcement interview, the young Italian explained how crucial it was for him to receive confirmation of his contract extension. “The team has always been very clear about their plans and what they wanted to do, so I wasn’t really worried. But it’s always reassuring to have that confirmation,” Kimi Antonelli said.
Antonelli and the fear of losing his seat
“With all the ups and downs, especially during the most difficult moments, doubts naturally arise. But the team has always been very open and supportive, letting me know they wanted to continue with me, particularly for next year. I’m really happy it’s now official. Even though I had an idea, I feel more relaxed knowing my seat is secure for 2026.”
Looking beyond the renewal, Antonelli clarified that he does not yet consider his long-term future guaranteed, but he intends to earn it on track, fully aware of the opportunities offered by the 2026 technical regulations. “I don’t know what will happen after 2026. I approach each year aiming for the best possible results. The team’s plan is to continue with me beyond 2026, but as a driver, it’s essential to perform and deliver results, especially next year, because I’ll have more experience and there will be major regulation changes for everyone.”
“If we have a competitive car, it will be really important to maximize every opportunity and give my absolute best, particularly if I want to secure my seat for 2027 and beyond.”
With the renewal now official, Mercedes reaffirms its confidence in the young driver, investing in his development ahead of the 2026 regulation changes. For Antonelli, this opens a second crucial season where he must prove he can meet the expectations and shoulder the responsibility of carrying the silver star forward.
