Valtteri Bottas has stated that he intends to leverage the experience he gained at Mercedes last year to help Cadillac during its debut Formula 1 season in 2026. The Finnish driver feels more prepared than ever, despite having spent a full year off the grid in the role of Mercedes reserve driver.
Valtteri Bottas believes that what he learned by attending all Mercedes meetings in 2025 and listening to the constant flow of information over the radio throughout an entire race weekend will be invaluable for Cadillac’s 2026 campaign. In an interview with RacingNews365, Valtteri Bottas explained the key lessons gained from a year spent mostly in the garage: “Probably the fact of seeing the sport from a different angle.”
“Because when you’re racing, when you’re on track, you basically have only one point of contact, and that’s your engineer. That’s all you know. But at every session, at every event, I heard everything, on all channels, and I saw in much more detail how the team operates, from trackside operations to all the different departments. I simply have far more knowledge than I did before,” he added.
“As a driver, you really work with a small group of people over a weekend, and you try to simplify and prioritize certain things. But now, having had more time, I’ve seen everything, how it actually works, and this can help me a lot when joining a team that is building everything from scratch.”
“There will be moments—and I’m sure there will be—when I’ll think about how Mercedes used to do things and whether some of it might work for us too. I think this perspective can really help me.”
As Cadillac prepares for its historic entry, the “Bottas factor” could be the catalyst that speeds up their learning curve. While the 2026 technical regulations offer a clean slate for everyone, the operational efficiency of a team often determines its ultimate success. By importing the rigorous standards and communication protocols from Brackley, Valtteri Bottas is positioning himself not just as a fast driver, but as a foundational pillar for the American squad. Fans will be eager to see if this “different perspective” can help Cadillac punch above its weight in its very first year on the grid.
