F1 | How much was Mercedes really hiding in Barcelona? Juan Pablo Montoya weighs in. Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya estimates that Mercedes still had significant untapped pace during the 2026 Barcelona tests.

George Russell, Mercedes W17, 2026 F1

Former Formula 1 drivers have analyzed Mercedes’ 2026 Barcelona testing and offered an estimate of just how much extra pace the W17 might still hold. Pre-season testing in Barcelona provided only a first snapshot of the 2026 season, but according to some authoritative voices in the paddock, Mercedes may have revealed only a fraction of its true potential. Even though the W17 did not post the absolute fastest lap over the three days, it impressed with mileage and reliability, convincing Juan Pablo Montoya that the Brackley team likely has much more in reserve.

Mercedes did not reveal its full hand in Barcelona

During testing, Mercedes completed roughly 500 laps with Andrea Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, immediately showcasing a solid and reliable power unit—a factor that is far from secondary in the new technical era. Yet, according to Juan Pablo Montoya, the timing sheets do not tell the full story. Speaking on the AS Colombia podcast, the former Colombian driver explained:

“To give you an idea and put things in perspective: from what I’ve heard, the lap times set in Barcelona were still three or four tenths off the car’s real potential.”

It’s a bold statement, one that puts any timing charts from testing into perspective and reinforces the idea that the true pecking order on the grid is still unknown. Juan Pablo Montoya also expanded his analysis to the wider grid. “As always, some teams will get the design right, and others won’t. The interesting part is this: if Mercedes is really that far ahead, then all Mercedes-powered teams should be strong.”

This leads to the season’s central question: who is truly maximizing their package, who is still searching for the ideal window, and where each team really stands. In short, the Barcelona tests may have shown only the surface of the 2026 Formula 1 field.

As the paddock moves toward the final days of preparation in Bahrain, the focus will shift from high-fuel endurance runs to qualifying simulations. If Juan Pablo Montoya’s sources are correct and Mercedes is indeed sitting on a multi-second advantage, the shockwaves could redefine the expectations for the entire championship. For fans, the mystery remains: are we looking at a genuine multi-team fight, or is the Silver Arrows’ dominance about to return in a massive way? The desert sun in Sakhir will be the first place where the W17 finally has to show its true colors.
