Max Verstappen’s future remains a mystery: Toto Wolff and Mercedes are still pursuing him.
Next year’s championship will bring many changes. Along with the new regulations and the arrival of new teams, another major development could concern Max Verstappen’s future, as the Dutch driver continues to draw attention from Mercedes and Toto Wolff.
The Austrian team principal has never hidden his attempts to bring the four-time world champion into his team after Lewis Hamilton’s departure, although he eventually opted for the pairing of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. At the same time, Max Verstappen himself has repeatedly stressed the importance of having a competitive car by 2026. This ongoing mutual interest is explained by growing paddock rumors suggesting that the Silver Arrows could become the team to beat next year, thanks to an engine that appears to be very competitive.
Toto Wolff’s courtship continues
Furthermore, according to reports by De Telegraaf, Toto Wolff is continuing to monitor the situation regarding Max Verstappen, with the aim of bringing him to Mercedes. This could explain the lack of an official announcement on George Russell’s contract renewal, which is set to expire at the end of the season. Although the Briton is said to have already reached an agreement for an extension, the team principal is reportedly delaying the announcement in order to keep evaluating Verstappen’s situation.
There also remains some uncertainty about possible clauses that could allow the Dutchman to leave his current team before the end of his contract. In recent days, there have been rumors suggesting that Verstappen could walk away from Red Bull if he is not in the top four of the standings after the Austrian GP. However, according to De Telegraaf, that clause is nothing more than “nonsense” and, in any case, would be very difficult to trigger given the current situation.
Still, according to what the Dutch newspaper has gathered, Max Verstappen’s entourage has provided reassurance that the number 1 will stay at Red Bull next year as well.
It is certainly a situation that will need to be monitored in the coming weeks, and the topic could heat up over the summer break, as a potential Max Verstappen exit would set off a new round of driver market changes.
