F1 | Red Bull looks outside Formula 1 for Max Verstappen’s 2026 teammate. Red Bull is exploring options for Max Verstappen’s 2026 teammate.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB21, 2025 F1
Red Bull Racing still has a vacant seat for the 2026 Formula 1 season, and speculation suggests it could be filled by an unexpected name. With Max Verstappen already confirmed, the question remains: who will partner the Dutch superstar when the new regulations arrive?

The Red Bull line-up for 2026 is far from clear. What is certain is that Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion, has reaffirmed his commitment to the team from Milton Keynes. However, his current teammate will leave at the end of the ongoing season, forcing Red Bull to look at alternative options.

Yuki Tsunoda was promoted earlier this year to replace Liam Lawson, who was sent back to Racing Bulls, but the Japanese driver has not been able to deliver performances superior to his predecessor. With mid-season driver changes now off the table, the Austrian outfit has shifted its focus to next year’s campaign.

This raises the crucial question: who could realistically sit alongside a phenomenon like Max Verstappen? According to fresh rumours, Red Bull appears to have identified a potential candidate that could surprise many within the paddock.

Reports from IndyStar claim that Laurent Mekies and his management group are closely monitoring Alex Palou, a four-time IndyCar champion who has built a reputation as one of the most consistent and dominant drivers in the American open-wheel series. Palou’s success has made him a high-profile figure outside of Formula 1, and linking him with a move to Red Bull Racing has immediately sparked excitement among fans.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether genuine negotiations are underway. Red Bull has neither confirmed nor denied the reports, while the parties directly involved told IndyStar that there is no agreement on the table. Still, the timing of these rumours is striking. The 2025 IndyCar season will conclude this Sunday, and Alex Palou currently leads the drivers’ standings, adding even more intrigue to the speculation.

This is not the first time Red Bull has been linked with Alex Palou. The Spanish driver’s contract with Chip Ganassi Racing runs until 2026, but it reportedly includes a release clause. That clause would allow him to leave IndyCar for a Formula 1 opportunity, provided that a significant financial buyout is paid to secure his departure.

For now, the future teammate of Max Verstappen remains a mystery. Red Bull is keeping its cards close to its chest, and fans will likely need to wait longer for a definitive answer. The potential signing of Alex Palou would be a bold and unconventional move, demonstrating the team’s willingness to look beyond the traditional pool of F1 drivers when building its future line-up.

However, Alex Palou is not the only option under consideration. Another name firmly on Red Bull’s radar is Isack Hadjar, the current Racing Bulls driver. The French rookie has impressed during his debut season in Formula 1, scoring encouraging results that have caught the attention of senior management. Promoting Hadjar would be a logical step for Red Bull, staying true to its philosophy of developing young talent through its junior programme.

In summary, Red Bull is facing one of its most intriguing driver market decisions in recent years. With Max Verstappen locked in as the cornerstone of the team, the search for his 2026 partner is wide open, spanning from seasoned stars in America’s IndyCar to rising talents already within the Red Bull family. Whether the final choice will be the experienced Alex Palou or the ambitious Isack Hadjar, the decision will have a significant impact on the team’s dynamic heading into Formula 1’s next era.
