The Monza Grand Prix weekend did not go as expected for Mercedes and their young driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Toto Wolff’s comments after the race reflected the team’s concerns.
The Monza GP proved to be a difficult weekend for Mercedes’ Italian rookie, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who races under car number #12. Expectations were high, but so far the rookie has faced significant challenges in his debut season. With a ninth-place finish at his home Grand Prix, partly due to a penalty, Antonelli dropped from seventh to eighth in the drivers’ championship, overtaken by Alex Albon.
Toto Wolff’s reaction
Toto Wolff has consistently expressed his support for Antonelli. However, his immediate post-race statements at Monza raised some eyebrows among F1 fans and analysts. Nico Rosberg, who has known Wolff for many years, offered some insight into the team principal’s mindset.
Wolff’s candid comments
After the Monza GP, Toto Wolff was very frank about Antonelli’s performance: “This weekend was disappointing. Putting the car in the gravel and expecting to be competitive. The entire race was disappointing.” Despite this sharp critique, Wolff also reiterated his complete confidence in the young Italian driver.
Rosberg’s perspective
Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was struck by Wolff’s unusual tone at Monza. Speaking on the F1 The Show podcast, Rosberg noted, “It’s surprising because, at the moment, the only real choice is to give Kimi [Antonelli] as much time as possible in the calmest way, which also means not criticizing him publicly.” He added, “And this change in tone from Toto [Wolff] is unprecedented… usually, there is a reason behind it. Toto [Wolff] is very calculated in his comments.”
The Russell comparison
The direct comparison with George Russell has also not worked in Antonelli’s favor. Rosberg pointed out the differences in qualifying and race results between the two drivers. Mercedes’ #12 driver is struggling to keep pace with his British teammate. For the former world champion, Antonelli is in a challenging position: “It’s really difficult and unfortunate, because everyone wants him to succeed. He can succeed, we know that. But the clock starts ticking at some point, and that’s tough.”
The question now is whether the Italian rookie can turn things around at the next race in Baku.
