Vowles: “Alex Albon never puts a foot wrong and now knows how to bounce back after a tough weekend”
Williams team principal James Vowles has heaped praise on Alexander Albon, describing the Anglo-Thai driver as a completely transformed competitor over the three and a half years he has spent with the Grove-based outfit. According to Vowles, Albon has not only become more consistent but has also developed the mental resilience to recover from setbacks and return stronger after difficult race weekends.
Alex Albon remains the leading figure at Williams
With the arrival of Carlos Sainz from Ferrari, many believed that the hierarchy within Williams would quickly change, with the Spaniard soon becoming the main reference point of the team. Instead, the balance has remained firmly in Albon’s favour. By the summer break, the score stood at 54 points to 16 in favour of the driver carrying the number 23. This gap is partly explained by some unfortunate races and the inevitable adaptation period for Sainz as he integrates into a new team, but the overall picture still underlines the quality and consistency that Albon has displayed throughout the season.
His performances have been particularly significant for Williams, as the team continues its rebuilding phase in the highly competitive Formula 1 midfield. Albon has regularly been the one bringing in points, securing the results that allow Williams to remain in the fight with rival constructors. His ability to deliver under pressure has made him the cornerstone of the team’s progress in 2025.
The praise from James Vowles
James Vowles has repeatedly emphasised how impressed he has been with Albon’s development, especially considering the challenges he faced earlier in his career. After his stint at Red Bull Racing, where he demonstrated flashes of raw talent but struggled with consistency against the formidable benchmark of Max Verstappen, Albon was forced to rebuild his career and confidence. At Williams, James Vowles believes, that transformation has been remarkable.
The team principal explained: “Already in 2023 he made a very big step forward and then kept improving year after year. For the first time, we managed to provide him with a car capable of delivering tangible results, but he never put a foot wrong. It is honestly difficult to find a race weekend or a qualifying session where he did not meet the expectations placed upon him.”
Albon’s mental strength as the real turning point
According to James Vowles, the greatest progress has come on the psychological side of Albon’s approach to racing. While his natural pace was always unquestionable, James Vowles pointed out that the driver has now found the ability to consistently reach and maintain his peak performance, regardless of the circumstances. This, the British team boss argues, is what separates the Albon of today from the Albon of his earlier Red Bull days.
James Vowles elaborated further: “He has always been incredibly fast, as he already demonstrated during his time at Red Bull. His ultimate performance ceiling has probably not changed much, but what has improved enormously is his ability to reach that level every single time. Even when things go wrong, he is so incredibly strong mentally that he manages to handle everything. The very next day, he gets back up and comes to the track with even more determination and desire to succeed. If you were to compare him with Max today, you would find a completely different person compared to the driver he used to be.”
A new chapter for Williams with Albon at the centre
As Williams continues its ambitious journey to return to the front of the Formula 1 grid, James Vowles clearly sees Alexander Albon as one of the team’s most valuable assets. His ability to combine speed with consistency, alongside his improved mental resilience, makes him a natural leader both on and off the track. While Carlos Sainz is still adjusting to life at Grove, Albon has already confirmed his role as the driver who can be relied upon to extract the maximum from the car on a regular basis.
For the Williams camp, Albon’s evolution represents more than just individual progress; it is a symbol of the entire team’s growth. His performances not only deliver crucial championship points but also inspire confidence within the garage, demonstrating that Williams is on the right path to compete with established midfield rivals and, in time, aim higher.
