McLaren is unlikely to replicate its current dominance in the 2026 Formula 1 season, and the reason for this is hidden in the upcoming regulation changes. Few expected such a commanding performance just months into what is supposed to be a new era for Formula 1. Instead, McLaren has demonstrated remarkable ingenuity, finding clever solutions within the existing 2025 regulations that have allowed the team to pursue a second consecutive Constructors’ Championship while already focusing on the car for the 2026 season.
Early focus on the 2026 car
The team led by Andrea Stella has built such a substantial advantage in 2025 that they can start working on next year’s car with relative calm and confidence. Being prepared for the debut of the 2026 regulations will be crucial, and at McLaren’s Woking headquarters, the engineers and management are determined not to be caught off guard. Strategic development now is seen as essential to maintain competitiveness as the technical landscape evolves.
Why McLaren may lose its edge
Despite their current performance, the papaya team is unlikely to maintain this same level of advantage in 2026. Carlo Vanzini explained the situation in one of his YouTube videos, providing insight into why McLaren’s 2025 edge may not translate into the next season. He stated, “Some say that with great skill, McLaren found and developed something within the regulations that will no longer be available in 2026. That is why other teams are not copying it. They were certainly clever to explore the nuances of a regulation that seemed to have reached its limits.”
The challenges ahead
Carlo Vanzini further elaborated on what McLaren can expect next year: “Next year, however, McLaren is not expected to have that astronomical advantage in tire management that they currently enjoy. Of course, all of this should be taken cautiously. At the same time, they will benefit from having demonstrated that they can optimize work on the chassis effectively. Additionally, the power unit will be Mercedes, and much has already been discussed regarding that.”
In summary, while McLaren’s clever exploitation of the 2025 regulations has brought immediate success, the team faces the challenge of adapting to new rules in 2026. Their current lead may narrow, but the experience gained in maximizing chassis performance and collaboration with Mercedes for the power unit could provide a solid foundation for continued competitiveness in the evolving Formula 1 landscape.
