F1 McLaren boss clarifies “papaya rules” ahead of Qatar GP, warns Max Verstappen in title fight. Andrea Stella addresses rumors about new “papaya rules” for the Qatar GP.

Andrea Stella, 2025 F1

Andrea Stella has addressed the speculation about introducing new “papaya rules” ahead of a Qatar GP where Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will have to defend their positions against Max Verstappen. Following the double disqualification in Las Vegas, Andrea Stella wants nothing more than to reach Abu Dhabi without having to worry about a potential Max Verstappen comeback. For this reason, the McLaren Team Principal discussed the possibility of implementing new ‘papaya rules’ in a Qatar GP that could decisively affect the championship battle.

The Italian engineer explained that McLaren’s main goal in Lusail is to prevent the Red Bull driver from re-entering the title fight, which was reignited by the double zero collected by Norris and Piastri in Nevada.

Andrea Stella outlines McLaren’s objective

After qualifying in Qatar, Andrea Stella spoke to the media in the paddock, including GP-News.net, to clarify these points. “No, there won’t be any new papaya rules in this race. Our approach will remain the same and it doesn’t depend on how many races are left in the season,” said the McLaren team principal.

“We still have both drivers in contention for the title, which means nothing needs to be changed internally. Of course, if for some reason Max were no longer part of this fight, we could open a few bottles of champagne. Our objective has always been to reach Abu Dhabi without having to think about any other driver except Lando and Oscar. But Max Verstappen has proven to be very fast even here, and for this reason we know it won’t be easy,” Andrea Stella added ahead of today’s Qatar Grand Prix.

With Lando Norris leading the standings and Oscar Piastri still mathematically alive, McLaren will continue to let their drivers race freely in Qatar – keeping the pressure firmly on the chasing Red Bull star.
