Even though Lando Norris is the 2025 Formula 1 World Champion, Martin Brundle has pointed out that there is still something missing in his skill set. According to the former F1 driver and commentator, the newly crowned champion lacks a quality that Oscar Piastri has already mastered.
In his end-of-season analysis, the 66-year-old praised Lando Norris’s improvements in several areas, particularly his race management, which played a key role in securing his first F1 World Championship. However, despite these strengths, Oscar Piastri still holds an edge in one crucial area.
Piastri’s advantage despite finishing third
Although the Australian finished third in the drivers’ standings due to a dip in performance during the final races of the 2025 calendar, his overtaking ability is considered superior to that of his teammate. Martin Brundle believes this is a trait Lando Norris has not yet fully developed.
Brundle’s analysis
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was fiercely contested, with three drivers in the title fight. Even though Norris ultimately won the 2025 drivers’ championship, Martin Brundle highlighted a skill that the British driver still lacks compared to Oscar Piastri. The Australian, however, narrowly lost the championship by 13 points after a late-season decline that saw him drop from the top of the standings to second, tied with Max Verstappen in the final races.
“His racecraft has always been good, and this year it was reinforced by sharper overtakes and defensive moves, as well as tire management,” the British commentator said, referring to McLaren’s No. 4. “Like his victory in Budapest, where he seemed to whisper to the tires, much to Oscar Piastri’s dismay.”
“Norris still doesn’t have the absolute, precise, and daring overtakes that Oscar Piastri shows. In many races, Oscar seized the opportunity to assert himself as the undisputed leader on the grid, with sensational wins in China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami, Spain, and Belgium. And notably, his last win of the season, nine races ago, in the Netherlands in August,” concluded the former F1 driver.
The new champion has the trophy, the number 1 for 2026 and the respect of the paddock. But if he wants to dominate the way the all-time greats have, Martin Brundle’s message is clear: master the art of the killer overtake, just like the team-mate who pushed him all the way to the crown.
