Helmut Marko breaks silence on Red Bull exit: “The title disappointment made me retire”. Helmut Marko has opened up for the first time on his shock retirement from Red Bull.

Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, Red Bull 2024

F1 | Helmut Marko opens up on Red Bull departure

After Christian Horner and Adrian Newey, Red Bull will bid farewell to another key figure at the end of the year: Helmut Marko. The Austrian advisor, who has played a pivotal role in the team’s success for over two decades, will officially leave Red Bull at the close of 2025. Even this year, the Milton Keynes squad came agonizingly close to celebrating another championship. Despite a remarkable comeback, Max Verstappen missed out on the drivers’ title by just 2 points, ceding the crown to Lando Norris.

In a recent interview with Kleine Zeitung, Helmut Marko explained the reasons behind his decision and revealed when he chose to inform the team.

Leaving after more than 20 years

Marko has had a tremendous impact not only on Red Bull but also on the wider world of Formula 1. Reflecting on the season, he admitted the pain of narrowly losing the drivers’ championship: “This season, I was the first, and together with Gianpiero Lambiase, the only one within the team who still believed in Max Verstappen’s world title. We were extremely excited and committed, so it was a huge disappointment when it didn’t happen.”

This disappointment was one of the driving factors behind his decision to step away: “From this disappointment came the decision that now was the right time to retire.” Helmut Marko added, “I leave Red Bull on excellent terms, and you will certainly still see me at the track occasionally. I believe the team is very well organized, and I am not leaving a team in chaos. Everything works, and there will certainly be improvements in certain positions.”

The official communication of his decision to Red Bull came only recently: “I informed the team of my decision just this Monday in Dubai.”

Future elsewhere?

Helmut Marko also addressed speculation about him joining another team, firmly shutting it down: “No. I am not considering any other team; that’s all nonsense.”

After two decades of shaping Red Bull into the most successful new team in F1 history, Helmut Marko is ready to watch from the outside – proud of what he built, but accepting the page has turned. The Max Verstappen era he helped create rolls on; the Marko era at Red Bull comes to a close.
