F1 | Lando Norris addresses Mexican fans’ reaction: “People can do what they want”. Lando Norris explained why he was booed by Mexican fans.

Lando Norris, 2025 F1

Lando Norris gave a provocative response to the fans who booed him on the podium at the Mexico GP, revealing why he believes the gesture occurred. The British driver dominated in Mexico, taking pole position and crossing the finish line first. He now leads teammate Oscar Piastri by just one point.

However, the Mexican crowd seemed unimpressed with the victory. During the post-race interview, thousands of fans at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez booed him. Lando Norris chose to ignore the gesture at the time.

The mocking reaction was later addressed in the press conference, where the #4 driver responded provocatively: “People can do what they want, honestly. They have the right to do it if they want to. I think sometimes that’s just part of the sport. I don’t know why I can’t stop laughing when I get booed. I think it’s actually more fun for me. Obviously, I’d prefer applause. It happened the same at Monza and a few other places. I just can’t stop laughing, so if they want to keep going, they can.”

Journalist Carlos Jalife from Fast Mag suggested a reason for the boos. “We conducted a survey. It seems that Mexicans think you are already being given the title. That’s why the boos. We also asked, ‘What should Lando do?’ and they answered, ‘Give back the three points.’ This was the response with the highest percentage.”

The “three points” refer to an incident in Monza earlier this year. A slow pit stop allowed Oscar Piastri to overtake him. Norris later regained the position following a McLaren team order.

Confused, Lando Norris asked what “three points” he should return, then reiterated his stance: “If they want to think that way, they certainly have the right to. They can think whatever they want. As a team, we try to do things fairly.”

The British driver also recalled when, two years ago in Budapest, he let Oscar Piastri pass, allowing him to win a race he deserved. “Honestly, the decision we made as a team back then was wrong, to hold him back first, or to let me win here,” he continued.

“To be honest, if they want those three points, they can have them. But they have the right to think what they want. Just as Oscar deserved the win last year in Budapest, I deserved to be ahead in Monza. Simple.”
