After qualifying in Mexico, Oscar Piastri appears increasingly under pressure. Matteo Bobbi analyzed the situation and suggested a key move to help the young Australian escape the slump and regain competitiveness.
McLaren’s internal battle
The 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix qualifying offered a new perspective on the internal fight within McLaren. On one side, Lando Norris, who delivered a flawless pole position and a nearly perfect weekend; on the other, Oscar Piastri, who qualified only eighth (later promoted to seventh due to Carlos Sainz’s penalty), finished fifth in the race, and is still struggling to find the lost feeling with his car.
Commenting on Piastri’s difficult moment, Matteo Bobbi explained: “When a team introduces upgrades, the goal is always to improve, but understanding whether they truly work is complicated. Even Red Bull has gone through similar periods of uncertainty.”
Deeper issues than Mexico
According to Matteo Bobbi, Oscar Piastri’s problem extends beyond just the Mexico race. “He seems to have accepted the current moment, but he wants clear answers. The issue is not just performance in qualifying, but something deeper concerning his connection with the car.”
The comparison with Max Verstappen comes naturally: “Even Max is going through a complicated phase, but the difference is that Norris seems to be enjoying himself while driving. He is fully in control, whereas Oscar appears blocked.”
An unexpected suggestion
Matteo Bobbi then offered an unexpected recommendation: “If I were in Oscar Piastri’s shoes, I would request a new chassis for the next race. Sometimes a radical change is necessary to reset doubts. When you lose the feeling with the car, even if you do everything correctly, the lap times do not come.”
Matteo Bobbi’s analysis raises a significant question for McLaren: will Oscar Piastri be able to regain confidence soon and respond to his teammate’s advantage? For now, Lando Norris appears to be on another level, reestablishing his position as the leader in a championship that is becoming increasingly challenging for the young Australian.
