Jacques Villeneuve crushes Mick Schumacher’s hopes and suggests that the future of the Cadillac Formula 1 project may be headed in a very different direction.
As is often the case with him, 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has once again spoken his mind without hesitation. In his view, Mick Schumacher would not be a suitable candidate for Cadillac’s highly anticipated Formula 1 debut in the 2026 season.
His remarks land like a cold shower for the German driver, who just a few weeks ago had described his discussions with the American team as “very positive,” hinting at serious negotiations and optimism about joining the grid with the General Motors-backed squad.
“No reason to bet on him”: Villeneuve’s blunt verdict
Cadillac’s planned arrival in Formula 1 as the sport’s eleventh team in 2026 has already sparked early moves in the driver market. Among the names reportedly under consideration is Mick Schumacher, who has been trying to carve out a way back onto the F1 grid. He is currently serving as a reserve and test driver for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team and also competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship with Alpine.
However, Jacques Villeneuve swiftly poured cold water on those ambitions. Speaking to Vision4Sport, he stated clearly: “He had difficulties during his time at Haas and he is not an experienced driver. There’s no reason to go for him.”
Villeneuve’s comments come at a pivotal moment for Cadillac, which is believed—according to speculation in the paddock—to be seriously evaluating more seasoned alternatives such as Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez. In particular, Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas, despite enduring a point-less season so far with Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, is reportedly at the top of the shortlist. Villeneuve acknowledged Bottas’s raw talent and depth of Formula 1 experience but also raised concerns regarding the level of motivation the Finnish driver has shown in recent seasons.
Although Villeneuve was harsh in his judgment of Mick Schumacher, his opinion is not the final word on the matter. The situation remains fluid. Cadillac has yet to officially confirm any driver line-up for its 2026 Formula 1 entry, leaving the door open to a variety of scenarios. The current phase of the so-called “musical chairs” among teams and drivers ahead of 2026 could still yield unexpected developments. A surprise move cannot be entirely ruled out, and negotiations are understood to still be ongoing.
In short, while Jacques Villeneuve may believe the former Ferrari junior is not the right choice, the story is far from over. Until Cadillac makes an official announcement, anything remains possible in the ever-changing world of Formula 1.
