The latest Formula 1 story drawing major attention now revolves around Cadillac’s entry into the sport. Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez had emerged as the front-runners to join the new team for the 2026 season, but a surprising development may change the landscape. A twist has emerged in the ongoing discussions about the driver lineup: the experienced pairing of Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas and Mexican driver Sergio Perez could either be a short-lived idea or may never materialize at all. According to reports, Graeme Lowdon, the team principal of the grid’s eleventh entry, is now in discussions with a young American talent for a potential seat.
Summer in Formula 1 is traditionally the season of both rumors and official announcements. Christian Horner’s departure from Red Bull Racing was just the first piece in what is becoming an incredibly complex puzzle across the paddock. In the lead-up to the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, another major update surfaced: Scuderia Ferrari confirmed that team principal Frédéric Vasseur had signed a multi-year contract extension with the Maranello-based outfit, a clear sign of the trust being placed in the French engineer’s long-term technical project.
Drivers, as always, are central to the off-track speculation, and Red Bull Racing continues to be at the heart of the drama. Reigning World Champion Max Verstappen remains the wildcard in the 2026 driver market. The Dutchman is reportedly being courted by Mercedes, which has created pressure not only on current Mercedes driver George Russell but also on rising junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli. In the end, however, Max Verstappen looks set to remain with the team based in Milton Keynes. Now, the latest dramatic saga centers on Cadillac’s anticipated debut in Formula 1.
Bottas, Perez… and a New Face in the Cadillac Equation
Over recent weeks, the candidacies of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez had appeared to gain momentum for securing the two available seats at Cadillac in 2026. Yet, no official confirmation has been provided so far, leading some to question whether the two Formula 1 veterans have truly convinced the American team of their value for this ambitious new project. Graeme Lowdon has long expressed his desire to bring an American driver into Formula 1 through Cadillac’s entry, and now a new name is reportedly being considered.
That driver is Jak Crawford, a 20-year-old native of Charlotte, North Carolina, who is currently competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. Although part of the Aston Martin Driver Academy, his prospects of finding a Formula 1 seat with the Silverstone-based team appear slim. This opens up a real possibility with Cadillac. In a recent interview with Motorsport.com, Jak Crawford admitted, “There have been some conversations, we are talking, but at the moment everything is moving very slowly. All I can do is focus on myself and on achieving the best possible results.”
As highlighted by the Mirror, Crawford might just be the unexpected contender—the underdog—keeping both the former Mercedes driver and the former Red Bull driver on edge. A final decision regarding Cadillac’s 2026 driver lineup could be announced in the coming weeks, as discussions and internal evaluations continue behind the scenes.
