Piastri faces a crucial challenge in the F1 title fight against Norris
Oscar Piastri was long considered a favorite for this season’s Formula 1 World Championship, especially after building a 34-point lead following the Dutch Grand Prix. However, a sharp drop in form has now forced the Australian to chase his teammate, Lando Norris, sitting 24 points behind.
Despite Oscar Piastri’s struggles after a disappointing Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Jacques Villeneuve believes the Australian’s title hopes are not entirely over with three races remaining. According to the 1997 world champion, Oscar Piastri needs to learn to personalize the MCL39 in the same way Norris has to regain his previous level.
“Norris has worked on his car,” Villeneuve said on Sky Sport. “He took the first step and really collaborated with the team to make that car his own. Unless Oscar Piastri can do the same, he will never get back to that level.”
Even with these clear difficulties, Oscar Piastri reflected on his recent performance in Brazil: “Things haven’t been going easily, that’s for sure. I believe there were definitely moments this weekend where I felt very comfortable. During the practice sessions, everything felt much easier, I felt really good. Then over the course of the weekend, things kind of got away from us a bit.”
