George Russell out of contract with Mercedes, uncertain about his F1 future: “The contract situation of other drivers is unusual”
The F1 driver market is heating up again: George Russell reflects on his contract with Mercedes and the “unusual situation” of other drivers. The Briton, having a strong season so far, is waiting for summer. It is in June that the Brackley-based team traditionally begins contract extension talks. In the meantime, he fears that some of his colleagues may be struggling with low self-confidence.
After the major changes of last winter, the upcoming silly season appears much more uncertain. The matter of the two Cadillac seats seems close to being resolved: for now, the main candidates are Sergio Perez and Zhou Guanyu. Everyone else could stay where they are—unless a certain four-time world champion from the Netherlands decides to leave Red Bull.
Max Verstappen is indeed the name that could once again shake up the grid. Some are convinced he has already signed with Aston Martin, where he would reunite with both Honda and Adrian Newey. However, the best choice might actually be Mercedes, a team rumored to have the strongest power unit once the new technical regulations come into effect.
Toto Wolff‘s trust and the self-confidence of other drivers
The Silver Arrows keep saying it: the future line-up consists of George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Still, having the current world championship leader free and looking for a new team might prove too tempting for Toto Wolff. In any case, the lead driver at Brackley is confident that there will be no problem securing a new deal. In fact, according to Russell, long-term contracts are “abnormal.”
“When Lewis [Hamilton] was in the team, contracts weren’t discussed before June,” the Briton told The Athletic. “Everything happened in the summer. What’s unusual is the situation other drivers are in, signing [long] contracts so early in the season. I believe that drivers who are so focused on locking in their futures are the ones who don’t have enough self-confidence, who need certainty.”
“The truth is, even if you have a contract, if you’re not delivering the right performance, the team will find a way to get rid of you. Your only bargaining chip is results. If you deliver, everything else follows. When people are unhappy, they look for change—so we’ll see what happens next season. I think it’s going to be an interesting summer.”
