George Russell faced several challenges during the Las Vegas Grand Prix qualifying, as an unexpected problem prevented him from competing for pole position. The Mercedes team was expected to be one of the protagonists on the cold Las Vegas track, but the results did not meet expectations. Kimi Antonelli ended up in a disappointing P17, while George Russell will start fourth on the grid. The British driver revealed that an unforeseen car issue stopped him from fighting for the top spot.
Throughout Friday evening, George Russell had shown excellent pace, appearing to be in full contention for pole after leading the timing sheets in FP3, Q1, and Q2. However, on his final decisive lap, he lost more than eight tenths of a second compared to pole-sitter Lando Norris, ultimately settling for fourth position.
The disappointment was significant, especially considering that Mercedes had been favored on this circuit leading up to the weekend. George Russell explained that a car issue prevented him from competing for pole. “I had a problem with the steering in Q3,” he told the media.
“I don’t know what it was, it felt like a power steering issue. It was really unfortunate. Obviously, we were the fastest in FP3, then in Q1 and Q2. On my second lap, I thought I would have to stop the car on track because I couldn’t turn the steering properly. I don’t know what it was. I feel lucky to have qualified P4 overall, but obviously it feels like a missed opportunity,” he added.
Despite acknowledging the complexity of the track conditions during qualifying, Russell admitted he felt some satisfaction in managing to bring the car to the finish line without damage. “Pretty horrible,” he commented. “It wasn’t fun at all. But it’s a nice challenge. You wouldn’t want it to be the same every week.”
Like his teammate, George Russell also escaped a potential disqualification due to an irregularity before the session. Starting from P4, he will now need to fight his way back to at least reach the podium.
