Toto Wolff reflects on dramatic Austrian GP qualifying after George Russell’s stunning pole position.
An unforgettable qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring
Qualifying at the Red Bull Ring rarely disappoints, and the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix certainly lived up to its reputation. Fans witnessed one of the most dramatic and unpredictable qualifying sessions of the season, with the battle for pole position turning on its head in the final moments following Max Verstappen‘s accident.
George Russell secured an extraordinary pole position, made even more impressive by the fact that he still managed to set the fastest lap despite lifting off the throttle through the final sector because of the yellow flags triggered by Max Verstappen’s crash.
Toto Wolff’s emotional reaction
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff shared his immediate reaction to the dramatic conclusion of qualifying while speaking to F1 TV.
“When I saw the yellow flag, I thought it was over. I was incredibly angry. I saw Antonelli lift off, and then George Russell took pole position. He produced a truly incredible lap, lifting just enough to comply with the yellow flag,” Wolff said.
The Austrian team boss admitted that, from the pit wall, he initially believed the opportunity for pole position had disappeared as soon as the yellow flags were displayed. Instead, George Russell perfectly interpreted the situation, respecting the regulations while still extracting enough performance from the Mercedes to secure the fastest time of the session.
Wolff compares George Russell and Kimi Antonelli
Toto Wolff also addressed the battle between his two Mercedes drivers, acknowledging Kimi Antonelli’s disappointment after the young Italian lost his chance to complete a final qualifying lap.
“Antonelli was very quick, but Russell would still have been ahead of Kimi,” Wolff added when discussing the internal battle between the two drivers. “I understand Antonelli’s frustration because he had dominated the weekend up until the yellow flag.”
Although Kimi Antonelli had impressed throughout every session leading into qualifying and appeared capable of fighting for pole position, the timing of Max Verstappen’s accident effectively ended those hopes. Even so, Toto Wolff expressed confidence that George Russell’s performance would still have been enough to keep him ahead of his Mercedes teammate.
