Piastri Finishes Second Behind Verstappen in Belgian GP Sprint: “We Lacked Speed on the Straight, But I’m Confident for Sunday”
Oscar Piastri crossed the finish line in second place in the Sprint Race at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, just behind reigning World Champion Max Verstappen. The McLaren driver lost the lead after only a few corners, when Max Verstappen made a decisive move on the opening lap to take first position. Despite falling behind early, the Australian remained within striking distance of the Red Bull for the entire race, staying consistently within DRS range and applying pressure lap after lap.
However, even with the aerodynamic assistance of the Drag Reduction System, Oscar Piastri struggled to find the extra burst of top speed needed to launch a proper overtaking attempt. The McLaren lacked straight-line performance, which proved to be the limiting factor in his fight for the lead.
In the closing stages of the 15-lap Sprint, Max Verstappen made a small mistake, allowing Piastri to close the gap by a tenth of a second. Yet despite that brief opportunity, the Australian driver was unable to capitalize on it, as Verstappen quickly reestablished control and defended his lead with precision.
Oscar Piastri’s Post-Race Comments After the Sprint at Spa-Francorchamps
When asked by the media whether he had anticipated such a challenge from Verstappen so early in the race, Piastri responded honestly: “Yes, more or less. We knew the start would be difficult. I tried not to give too much of a tow down the straight, but we just didn’t have enough straight-line speed. That’s where we were lacking, even in the laps that followed. Still, it’s a Sprint Race—tomorrow is when the real points are on the line, so I’m satisfied with today.”
Pressed further about the McLaren’s performance and whether the team had perhaps added too much downforce to the car, Piastri acknowledged that setup choices had been influenced by weather forecasts for Sunday: “There was really no opportunity to overtake Max in this Sprint. As for the car setup, maybe we leaned a bit too much into downforce. But the weather forecast for tomorrow predicts heavy rain, so we don’t want to remove too much downforce either. We’ll see what adjustments we can make. There’s still a lot to analyze.”
Looking ahead to the next session, which was just a few hours away, Piastri remained positive and determined: “Yes, that’s what I’m hoping for. Spa is my favorite track of the year—especially for qualifying. I can’t wait to go out again and put together more fast laps.”
Looking Forward to Qualifying and the Grand Prix
While the Sprint Race did not end with the result Oscar Piastri may have hoped for—having started from pole position and finished second—his overall tone remained composed and optimistic. The true test will come in the main Grand Prix on Sunday, where full race points are awarded and strategy, weather, and tyre management could all shift the competitive balance.
Qualifying later on Saturday will also play a critical role in setting the tone for the race. McLaren’s strategic decisions—including a possible trade-off between straight-line speed and downforce—will be either validated or questioned depending on how the car performs across both dry and potentially wet conditions.
