Lando Norris secured third place in the Sprint Race of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, held at the historic and high-speed Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Despite a promising start to the race, the British driver was unable to catch either his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri or the reigning World Champion Max Verstappen, who crossed the finish line ahead of him.
The Sprint turned out to be a rather static affair, with the most notable action occurring in the opening laps. Right after the start, as the drivers approached the end of the Kemmel straight, Oscar Piastri – who had begun the race from pole position – was overtaken by Max Verstappen. The Red Bull Racing driver made his move early and took control of the race from that point forward.
A similar situation unfolded just behind them on the second row of the grid. Lando Norris was overtaken by Charles Leclerc in the early phase of the race and briefly lost third place. However, the McLaren driver quickly responded and reclaimed the position from the Monegasque driver of Scuderia Ferrari, setting off in pursuit of his teammate ahead.
A DRS train soon formed involving the top three cars on the track. This aerodynamic tow effect, combined with Verstappen’s impeccable race pace and control, made it nearly impossible for either of the McLaren drivers to close the gap and mount an attack. In the end, Max Verstappen claimed victory in the Sprint Race, followed by Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, giving McLaren a double podium behind the dominant Red Bull.
Lando Norris’s Comments After the Sprint
Following two consecutive race wins in recent Grands Prix, Lando Norris had to settle for third in the Belgian Sprint. The early moments of the race proved to be the most challenging for the British driver, as he was passed by Charles Leclerc on the first lap. Although he quickly recovered the position, the remaining 13 laps were relatively uneventful in terms of overtaking.
Reflecting on the race, Norris stated: “Yeah, not a lot really happened out there. There was a bit of fun at the start – I had to re-pass Charles [Leclerc] after he got me at the beginning. Maybe I could have placed the car a little better. After that, though, overtaking Max [Verstappen] was extremely difficult.”
The British driver went on to explain that due to Oscar Piastri being stuck behind Verstappen, he too was unable to close the gap. The continuous DRS train limited opportunities for all three front-runners to attack or defend effectively. “Oscar [Piastri] couldn’t get past Max, which meant I couldn’t get to Oscar. It just became one long DRS queue. We’ll see how things go tomorrow – luck wasn’t really on our side today.”
Although the gaps between the top three drivers were minimal at times, there was never a genuine opportunity to see any real fighting for the lead. McLaren simply lacked the straight-line speed needed to challenge the Red Bull, and Norris admitted he was hoping for more drama up front to create an opening.
“It’s tough around here. Obviously I was hoping there would be a bit more battling up front, but the Red Bull was just far too quick on the straight for us to have a chance of getting close,” explained car number 4. “Maybe we need to make a few tweaks before qualifying, I’m not sure yet. We’ll go back, reassess everything, and decide what to do.”
Having claimed two consecutive race victories in the recent Formula 1 calendar, the McLaren driver is still eyeing a third win. However, Lando Norris remains cautious and is not allowing expectations to rise too high, instead choosing to focus on delivering a clean and fast qualifying performance in Q3.
“That’s the plan,” Norris said. “I wasn’t super quick in the Sprint today, but often I prefer the full-length race anyway. So we’ll see how things play out tomorrow.”
The British driver added that he was feeling more comfortable in the car on Friday, despite mixed conditions. “Yesterday wasn’t too bad for me. I felt reasonably comfortable out there. A few things went our way, and I’m confident we can get a strong result. We just need to put together a good lap in qualifying,” he concluded.
