McLaren experienced a race of contrasting fortunes at the Austrian Grand Prix, the eighth round of the Formula 1 World Championship at the Red Bull Ring. While Oscar Piastri came within touching distance of the podium with an impressive fourth-place finish, Lando Norris endured a much more difficult afternoon, eventually crossing the line in seventh. Even so, the Woking-based team achieved one important objective by finishing ahead of both Ferraris.
Oscar Piastri extracts the maximum from McLaren
Oscar Piastri finished just off the podium after a solid and consistent drive, trailing race winner George Russell, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli. The Australian delivered a composed performance throughout the race and comfortably finished ahead of the Ferrari drivers.
Speaking after the Grand Prix, Piastri expressed his satisfaction with the result. “I think that was the maximum I could have achieved. We didn’t have the pace to challenge Mercedes or Max, and beating both Ferraris made it a really good day. So I’m very happy with that.”
Piastri also praised the team’s execution during the race and highlighted the importance of strategy. “In terms of getting priority in the pit lane, it’s always an advantage to be the first car on track for the team. I think the team did a really good job with the strategy and didn’t leave anything on the table. So yes, I think our pace afterwards was strong, and I managed to get ahead of Charles.”
His comments underline how effectively he maximized McLaren’s potential during a weekend in which Mercedes and Max Verstappen’s Red Bull proved to have the upper hand. Fourth place still represents a valuable haul of Constructors’ Championship points, with the Melbourne driver making the most of an effective strategy and strong pace during the middle and final stages of the race.
Lando Norris left frustrated after difficult afternoon
Lando Norris finished seventh after a challenging race that kept the reigning world champion outside the top five for much of the afternoon. A difficult opening lap and the inability to recover positions ultimately compromised his result.
After the race, Norris admitted his disappointment. “Today everything depended completely on track position. I got passed by several cars on the opening lap and then by Hadjar during the first round of pit stops.”
The British driver went on to explain the difficulties he encountered throughout the race. “It was an unfortunate Austrian Grand Prix for me, and it’s almost impossible to overtake a car that’s quicker than you. Today I had no chance of getting past Hadjar. Apart from that, I think it was clear that when we were running in clean air, the car was extremely strong. I just lost a little too much time at the beginning.”
Norris’ comments highlight one of McLaren’s key strengths: the car performs extremely well when it has clean air and is not trapped in traffic. However, qualifying and the opening laps ultimately shaped his race, preventing him from exploiting the car’s full potential. Despite the disappointing outcome, Norris acknowledged the competitiveness of the package under ideal conditions and remains optimistic heading into the next round of the Formula 1 season.
