Alpine, a weekend to forget in Austria: tyre degradation and battery nightmare

The Austrian Grand Prix weekend ended on a disappointing note for Alpine, with the Enstone-based team finishing outside the points for the first time this Formula 1 season.

Extreme temperatures, severe tyre degradation and battery-related issues at the race start all played a significant role in compromising the French team’s performance. It was a frustrating outcome for Alpine, which saw its consistent points-scoring streak come to an end at the Red Bull Ring.

However, there is little time to dwell on the disappointment, with Silverstone just around the corner. Alpine is already focused on the upcoming Sprint weekend, where valuable championship points will once again be up for grabs.

Below are the post-race comments from Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto.

Pierre Gasly’s comments

“There’s a lot to understand. I had to make three pit stops because my tyres were wearing out incredibly quickly.”

The French driver also revealed that he suffered a loss of power during the opening stages of the race, costing him several positions. While he admitted that he knows “what was missing” in terms of the car’s behaviour, he described the underlying cause of the malfunction as “the million-dollar question.”

Franco Colapinto’s comments

The Argentine driver painted a very similar picture after the race.

“Overall, we really didn’t have any pace or grip out there. I also lost power at the start, and everyone passed me into Turn 1. We need to understand what happened and come back stronger at Silverstone,” he concluded.
