The chequered flag marks the conclusion of the third race of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship. Incredibly, against all expectations at the start of the weekend, Max Verstappen triumphs in the Japanese GP. The reigning world champion holds his qualifying position from start to finish, keeping the two McLarens behind: here are his words.
If there were any doubts left about his talent, they vanish today. With a car clearly inferior to the two McLarens, Max Verstappen completes 53 flawless laps. At the start, he manages to hold off Lando Norris, who aimed his car at Verstappen’s in an attempt to outsmart him off the line. From there, there were no rivals.
The Red Bull number 1 sets the pace, lap after lap, without hesitation. The only “attack” on the lead comes during the pit stops, when Norris, exiting the pit lane, attempts an impossible overtaking move on the grass. Fortunately, the two didn’t make contact, and the race continued without incident. Max Verstappen keeps imposing his rhythm all the way to the chequered flag.
Not even the dangerous closing laps, with the two McLarens getting closer, unsettled him. Crossing the finish line in first place, he further cements his place in the history of the sport. His 64th victory, making him the only driver to win the Japanese GP four times in a row. In the post-race interview, just after getting out of the car, Max Verstappen looked very pleased with the result.
“Yes, I admit it was very tough. I pushed a lot, especially in the final stint with the hard tires, because the two behind me started putting a lot of pressure on. Managing the tires wasn’t easy, so I’m really happy. The weekend didn’t start the best, but today the car was in its best form.” – the four time Formula 1 world champion added – “Starting from pole definitely helped me a lot, but it’s always important to make the most of your performance, and we did really well. For me, it means a lot to have won here. In the final laps, I told myself, ‘I have to try to hold my position; it’s our farewell race with Honda.’ It’s been a beautiful relationship with them, and I think this is a perfect farewell.” – the Dutchman concluded.
