Jos Verstappen publicly rebukes Ralf Schumacher again
Jos Verstappen has once again taken aim at Ralf Schumacher, this time over recent claims concerning Max Verstappen’s future and a potential move to Mercedes.
According to Ralf Schumacher, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had presented Max Verstappen with an offer to leave Red Bull and join the Brackley-based team. Schumacher also suggested that the proposal on the table was not particularly lucrative.
The speculation comes amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen’s long-term future. The Dutch driver reportedly has a clause in his Red Bull contract that could allow him to leave the team if he is not running second in the Drivers’ Championship by the summer break.
Based on the current performance of the Red Bull RB22, that scenario appears increasingly difficult to avoid. Although the FIA recently indicated that the Red Bull-Ford power unit currently features the strongest internal combustion engine on the grid, Verstappen still faces a significant challenge in closing the 60-point gap that separates him from Lewis Hamilton in the championship standings.
Jos Verstappen has now entered the debate directly. Commenting on Instagram beneath a Sky Deutschland post covering Ralf Schumacher’s report, Max Verstappen’s father openly challenged the former Formula 1 driver’s claims.
“Ralf, once again you are reporting false information,” Jos Verstappen wrote.
However, he did not elaborate on exactly which part of the report was inaccurate. Jos Verstappen stopped short of clarifying whether the alleged contact between Mercedes and Max Verstappen never took place, or whether his objection concerned Schumacher’s claim that the offer from Mercedes was relatively low.
As a result, the comment has only added further intrigue to one of the biggest driver market stories in Formula 1. With Mercedes continuing to be linked to Max Verstappen and speculation surrounding his Red Bull future showing no signs of slowing down, the debate is likely to continue in the weeks ahead.
