F1 2025: Max Verstappen’s title hopes could collapse in Las Vegas. Max Verstappen heads into the Las Vegas Grand Prix with almost no margin for error..

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB21, 2025 F1

Max Verstappen arrives at the Las Vegas weekend carrying the highest level of pressure he has faced all season. The margin to stay alive in the title battle is incredibly thin, and any mistake could prove fatal. In the same place where he celebrated his dominance a year ago, he now risks seeing his chance to defend the crown disappear completely. With 58 points still available across the final races and the Qatar sprint, the head-to-head fight with Lando Norris has turned into a purely mathematical duel where every finishing position weighs more than outright speed.

The scenarios that could eliminate Verstappen from the title fight

The 49-point gap after the Brazilian Grand Prix means Max Verstappen must absolutely avoid losing more than nine points to Lando Norris. The toughest scenario is clear: if the McLaren driver wins the race, the Dutchman would be forced to finish second, otherwise the World Championship would effectively end here. Even a second-place finish for Lando Norris would oblige Max Verstappen to stay inside the top five, while a third place for the Briton would require Max Verstappen to finish at least seventh. Every variation, every point, reshapes the entire picture: even one underwhelming result could push him beyond the mathematical threshold from which there is no return.

The hidden variables and McLaren’s weight in the title arithmetic

When Lando Norris finishes fourth or fifth, the calculations become even more delicate: Max Verstappen would need to remain inside the top eight or at least the top nine to avoid exceeding the 58-point limit. In all this, Oscar Piastri does not affect the mathematics of the title chase. Even a victory for the Australian with Max Verstappen out of the points would still keep the fight open. The real issue lies elsewhere: with such a large gap, the Red Bull champion now depends as much on his own performance as on his rivals’ bad days. Even a perfect end to the season would not guarantee him the title, because Norris, thanks to consistent podium finishes, could still close the season ahead. In Las Vegas, the World Championship will not be decided, but for one of the protagonists it could effectively come to an end.
