The 2025 Formula 1 season has seen an unexpected leader emerge in a less-than-coveted ranking: Gabriel Bortoleto of Sauber has caused the highest financial damage due to multiple accidents, particularly after a disastrous weekend at the São Paulo Grand Prix. The Brazilian, a fan favorite at home, was involved in two major incidents: in the first lap of the main race, he collided with Lance Stroll, sending his car straight into the wall, while in the Sprint race, a failed overtaking attempt on Alexander Albon ended with a violent crash into the barriers, worsened by a DRS that accidentally remained open and a puddle of water on the straight.
Onboard telemetry recorded a deceleration of approximately 57g, leaving Gabriel Bortoleto’s Sauber completely destroyed. The mechanics faced a monumental task just to get him ready for qualifying. Fortunately, the young driver emerged unscathed, a testament to the FIA’s strict safety standards.
The season’s accident costs speak for themselves: Sauber has suffered over €3.1 million in damages, while Yuki Tsunoda ranks second with €2.9 million and Lando Norris is third with €2.3 million, following significant impacts in Saudi Arabia and Canada. Notably, Jack Doohan accumulated nearly €2 million in damages despite competing in only six Grands Prix, highlighting the severity of his incidents, including a spectacular crash in Japan.
At the other end of the spectrum, Max Verstappen continues to demonstrate remarkable consistency and control, ranking last in this particular list with just €200,000 in season damages. In a championship where every mistake carries a heavy cost in both points and finances, the three-time world champion has once again proven the value of precision and the ability to avoid unnecessary risks.
