Despite a difficult season, particularly in the early stages, and a significant points gap to Lando Norris, the championship leader, Max Verstappen remains mathematically in the running for the 2025 F1 World Championship. The four-time world champion analyzed the reasons behind his struggles and shared what he expects from the remaining races of the season.
After the Brazilian Grand Prix, where he finished third following an extraordinary comeback from the pit lane, Verstappen finds himself 49 points behind Lando Norris’ McLaren, who regained the championship lead after the Mexican Grand Prix. With three races still to go, including the Sprint in Qatar, Verstappen’s comeback chances are minimal, though he is only 25 points behind Oscar Piastri, who held the top spot for much of the season. This prompted the Red Bull driver to reflect on his year and draw initial conclusions.
Verstappen assesses the season
During the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, Max Verstappen spoke about stepping aside from the title fight in words, even though mathematically he still has a shot at a fifth championship, with 83 points still available. Speaking to Sky Sports F1 after the race in Interlagos, he said: “We have already lost too many points, obviously, from the start of the season through the middle part.”
“The fact that we are still in the fight at this stage has already been a big surprise, but we need to be realistic. I think over the course of the entire season, we have not been good enough, but we will still try to give everything until the end of the year to secure key moments and aim to win races. That is why we are here.”
