Formula 1: Jack Doohan enters the race for a potential Cadillac seat

Jack Doohan may be on the verge of making a return to the Formula 1 grid—this time under different colours. The young Australian driver, who had a promising yet ultimately unfulfilling stint with Alpine due to the team’s lacklustre performance, is currently serving as a reserve and development driver. However, his ambitions are far greater than simply remaining on the sidelines.

According to reports from PlanetF1, Jack Doohan is now in active talks with the new Cadillac Formula 1 team regarding a potential full-time seat. The American outfit, which is preparing to make its highly anticipated entry into Formula 1, is continuing its search for the ideal driver lineup, and Doohan has now become a serious contender.

During the recent British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone, Jack Doohan was seen holding a formal meeting with the team principal of Cadillac. This follows earlier speculation that began during the Monaco Grand Prix, where Doohan and team representatives were reportedly spotted in deep conversation within the paddock area.

Cadillac, part of General Motors’ motorsport ambitions, is still assembling its debut F1 lineup. The list of potential candidates is growing steadily and now includes several experienced names from the Formula 1 paddock: former Mercedes and Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas, current Red Bull Racing driver Sergio “Checo” Pérez (whose contract situation remains uncertain), ex-Haas driver Mick Schumacher (currently affiliated with Mercedes), Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu, and now Jack Doohan.

Each of these drivers is either out of contract or facing an unclear future within the sport, and Cadillac presents one of the few open doors into the 2026 Formula 1 season. With the mid-season break rapidly approaching, the month of August is expected to become a critical moment for contract negotiations and announcements.

For Jack Doohan, the possibility of joining a new works team like Cadillac would mark a major leap in his career, giving him a second chance to prove his worth at the highest level of motorsport. The son of five-time motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan, Jack has long been regarded as one of the most talented junior drivers in the pipeline and has maintained close ties to Alpine’s programme despite not securing a race seat.

As Cadillac finalises its long-term strategy ahead of its official Formula 1 debut, the question now is: which of these out-of-seat drivers will earn the chance to return to the grid? With tension building and negotiations heating up, the upcoming summer break may turn out to be one of the hottest and most decisive periods of the entire driver market.
