Esteban Ocon has confirmed that an argument with Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu led to his exclusion from the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, but has firmly denied allegations of any physical confrontation. The French driver’s disciplinary removal from the race weekend has intensified speculation about his future with the American Formula 1 team.
The dispute reportedly erupted after Friday’s second free practice session at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, with tensions between Esteban Ocon and Haas escalating into a serious disagreement. With the driver now facing an uncertain future ahead of the 2027 season, the incident could have significant consequences for his Formula 1 career.
Esteban Ocon confirms Haas dispute but denies physical violence
Relations between Haas and Esteban Ocon appear to have reached breaking point following a heated argument involving team principal Ayao Komatsu. The team subsequently excluded the Frenchman from the remainder of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend on disciplinary grounds, immediately raising questions about whether their partnership can continue.
As often happens following such incidents, speculation quickly emerged about what had taken place behind the scenes. French publication L’Équipe even raised the possibility of a physical confrontation between the driver and his team principal, prompting Esteban Ocon to issue a statement addressing the allegations.
Although the Frenchman acknowledged that the previous day’s disagreement was behind his exclusion, he categorically rejected any suggestion that violence had occurred between himself and Ayao Komatsu.
Esteban Ocon issues statement following Mexico GP exclusion
Responding to the controversy, Esteban Ocon explained why he had decided to address the situation publicly.
“Following the recent decision by Haas confirming my exclusion from this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix, I would like to formally address certain media reports and speculation surrounding the situation,” the French driver stated.
He then acknowledged the disagreement while firmly rejecting the allegations of physical misconduct.
“Last night, a difference of opinion led to an argument. While I acknowledge that this took place, I categorically reject any reports or allegations suggesting that any form of physical violence was used to resolve disagreements of any kind.
“I strongly condemn violence in all its forms and firmly believe that disagreements should always be handled with professionalism, respect and mutual understanding.
“I kindly ask that speculation be avoided while the matter is being addressed. Further updates will be communicated in due course.”
Could a disagreement over Haas FP2 strategy have triggered the argument?
One possible explanation for the confrontation concerns a disagreement between Esteban Ocon and race engineer Laura Müller over the team’s running programme during FP2 in Mexico City.
The French driver reportedly wanted to continue evaluating his pace on the soft tyres rather than returning to the pits to switch to a harder compound. His preference may have been motivated by a desire to record more competitive lap times and demonstrate his performance, although the precise circumstances behind the disagreement remain uncertain.
Such tensions would come at a particularly delicate moment for Esteban Ocon, whose position on the Formula 1 grid beyond the current season remains unresolved.
Esteban Ocon’s 2027 F1 future in doubt after Haas fallout
Esteban Ocon had shown signs of improving his performances over the previous month, finishing ahead of Haas team-mate Oliver Bearman on two of the three occasions when both drivers reached the chequered flag. Those results had offered some encouragement as the Frenchman continued his efforts to secure a place on the 2027 Formula 1 grid.
However, the disciplinary controversy in Mexico represents a serious setback at a time when every opportunity to impress potential employers matters. An acrimonious departure from Haas would hardly provide the ideal conclusion to his relationship with the team, nor would it strengthen his case for a seat elsewhere.
Among the possibilities being discussed is a reserve driver role at Aston Martin, although Esteban Ocon’s preferred outcome is believed to be a full-time race seat with Cadillac, potentially replacing Valtteri Bottas.
The situation now leaves two major questions unanswered: whether Haas will allow Esteban Ocon another opportunity to race before the season ends, and whether the team will instead decide to terminate his contract before the conclusion of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship.
Given the severity of the dispute and the disciplinary action already taken, an early separation appears the more likely possibility. For Esteban Ocon, the immediate priority is resolving the fallout with Haas while attempting to protect his prospects of remaining on the Formula 1 grid in 2027.
